Reporting – Principles of Diagnostic Image Reporting
Using a range of conventional and interactive learning methods, you will develop the knowledge base, analytical, interpretive and evaluative skills required to underpin the practice of diagnostic image reporting.
This module will enable you to develop the skills to analyse and synthesise the principles of vision psychophysics in the context of diagnostic image assessment as well as the application of the principles of performance measurement in diagnostic image reporting. You will also learn to assess the role of the practitioner engaged in diagnostic image reporting from a medico−legal perspective and the recognition and assessment of the factors involved in image pattern recognition.
- Psychophysical principles related to visual perception and vision physiology; decision thresholds, decision making and clinical reasoning; principles of pattern recognition
- Application of performance measurement in image reporting including, sensitivity, specificity, accuracy; statistical Inter−rater reliability evaluation; Receiver Operator Characteristic (ROC) curves
- Medico−legal perspectives in image reporting, including governance requirements; audit and research

Learning Methods
This course is delivered in two blocks and is a 15 credit module delivered over one term:
- Block one attendance: September
- Block two attendance: December
- Optional attendance: January
It can be taken in conjunction with modules HSM132, HSM133, HSM134 as a route to a PgCert and will be of value to radiographers and other professionals who require to understand the principles applied in the assessment and interpretation of diagnostic images.
