Be a design student for the day immersing yourself in the design process. Explore part of Gray’s Degree Show 2025 to collect inspiration for colour, shape, and pattern. Then, work in the studio to design textile concepts, alongside figure drawing to develop your own fashion and textile illustrations.
The day begins with an introduction to fashion, textile design, and illustration, focusing on how to gather information for developing individual design concepts. Understanding the design process; research, development, solution, and evaluation will be central throughout the day.
Students will use a viewfinder to focus on key elements of colour, shape, and pattern from the exhibition, recording their observations in sketchbooks with coloured pencils. This process will help isolate abstracted shapes, patterns, and colours, forming the foundation for developing their design concepts.
In the studio, students will learn to transform their sketches into textile designs, experimenting with scale, proportion, and colour to create swatches for fashion and textile concepts. This process will involve exploring colour palettes, shapes, and proportions to develop unique patterns.
The workshop will include some basic life drawing, focusing on the form and proportions of the human body using a clothed life model. Students will create simple line drawings from various poses and combine them by collaging their own textile designs. During this process, they will apply principles of body proportions, centre of gravity, and volume, and finally "dress" their figures with textile designs, resulting in a series of fashion illustrations.
Throughout the day, there will be opportunities for discussion, constructive feedback, and evaluation of each other’s work, fostering a collaborative environment for learning and development.
Students will have access to a variety of materials, including paper, pencils, fine liners, water colours, oil pastels, fabric scraps, magazine cuttings, scissors, and glue, for experimentation during the workshop.
A sketchbook will be provided to each student.
The work produced during this workshop, along with the documentation, could serve as valuable material for a portfolio when applying for an undergraduate degree at Gray's School of Art.

Crafted in her studio in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, she continues to explore the interplay between form and surface decoration.
An important part of her practice is supporting and teaching individuals of all ages to develop their creativity through courses and workshops.
