Leading Innovation in Advancing Healthcare Practice
To enable practitioners to develop a critical understanding of the theories, principles and concepts required to become a leader within advanced practice.
Consideration of public involvement in the advancing role of the nurse and how people who use services and their carers should be involved in co-production of innovation and service delivery.
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
- Analyse the professional and regulatory positions within advanced practice and relate them to leadership in advanced practice.
- Critically examine the evidence base for improving the sustainable implementation and spread of healthcare innovation.
- Critically evaluate approaches to leading people and teams through organisational change.
- Critically reflect on the leadership skills required to lead innovation in advanced practice.
- Demonstrate critical self-evaluation of personal and professional development.

Learning Methods
This module is delivered online via our Virtual Learning Environment Moodle.
The module runs over one semester there are 5 topics to direct student learning.
Recorded topic overviews will be available to further support students learning.
These topics are also supported by 7 online synchronous sessions whereby students are encouraged to engage in discussion to contextualise theory to their practice.
Students are expected to engage with discussion forums throughout the module to support students in their knowledge, shared learning and help to build a learning community.
Each student will be allocated an academic tutor and will have the opportunity to submit a formative assessment.
Independent Study
It is recommended that student undertake 8 hours of private study per week.
Assessment
The assessment is a written essay that is submitted through our online learning platform on a set date and time.
Staff Delivering on This Course
There are two lecturers delivering this module, who have extensive healthcare teaching experience, and both lead different educational routes within the school.
Academic Support
The Inclusion Centre advises and supports students who disclose a sensory or mobility impairment, chronic medical condition, mental health issue, dyslexia and other specific learning differences. Applicants are encouraged to arrange a pre-entry visit to discuss any concerns and to view the facilities.
Online Learning & Support
All online learning students, benefit from using our collaborative virtual learning environment, CampusMoodle. You will be provided with 24/7 online access to your learning material and resources, along with the ability to interact with your class members and tutors for discussion and support.
Study Skills Support
The Study Support Team provides training and support to all students in:
- Academic writing
- Study skills (note taking, exam techniques, time management, presentation)
- Maths and statistics
- English language
- Information technology support
Library Support
The Library offers support for your course, including the books, eBooks, and journals you will need. We also offer online reading lists for many modules, workshops and drop-ins on searching skills and referencing, and much more.
Career Prospects
Credit from this module may contribute to the MSc Healthcare Leadership, MSc Advancing Healthcare Practice and the MSc Advanced Practice.
Standard Entry Requirements
Normally, you are expected to be able to demonstrate degree level study; however, if this is not the case, you are encouraged to make contact and discuss your circumstances.
English Language Requirements
Applicants must satisfy the University's general admission requirements to courses as contained in Academic Academic Regulation A2: Admission and Enrolment, including proficiency to a minimum standard in the English language.
