Clinical Assessment and Examination for Advancing Practice
This course will prepare you to independently undertake a clinical history and examination and critically explore the impact of pathophysiological processes and their impact on patient care to aid clinical decision making.
This module is part of the MSc Advancing Healthcare Practice programme, but can also be undertaken as a stand-alone module.
- Clinical history taking and clinical assessment across the lifespan
- Clinical examination skills of the cardiovascular, respiratory, musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal and neurological systems
- How to construct a differential diagnosis, clinical decision making and documentation of findings
- Autonomous practice and scope of practice

Learning Methods
The January and September cohorts are delivered online with 5 single online study days and online learning (including online chat, virtual classroom and discussion forums). In addition, you will engage with directed and self-directed learning activities supported by the module team.
The April cohort will be delivered using a blend of face to face (5 single study days) on campus teaching and online learning (including online chat, virtual classroom and discussion forums). In addition, you will engage with directed and self-directed learning activities supported by the module team.
Assessment
January and September cohorts – the course is assessed via a virtual Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).
April cohorts – the course is assessed via a face to face on campus Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).
Academic Support
The Inclusion Centre advises and supports students who disclose a sensory or mobility impairment, chronic medical condition, mental health issue, dyslexia and other specific learning differences. Applicants are encouraged to arrange a pre-entry visit to discuss any concerns and to view the facilities.
Study Skills Support
The Study Support Team provides training and support to all students in:

- Study skills (note taking, exam techniques, time management, presentation)
- Maths and statistics
- English language
- Information technology support
This module is suitable for registered nurses, midwives and health and social care professionals.
Normally, you are expected to be able to demonstrate degree level study; however, if this is not the case, you are encouraged to make contact and discuss your circumstances.
In addition to course entry requirements, you must identify a clinical mentor within your workplace to facilitate supervised practice of clinical skills.
