This two-day workshop invites participants to learn wax carving and sandcasting techniques with the aim to create an individual piece of jewellery in the form of a pendant, cast in silver.
This Art Weekender will begin with an introduction to wax carving, which is recognised as an ancient technique in jewellery making. Wax carving involves a malleable wax that can be used to produce free form jewellery designs.
Participants will be taught techniques such as carving, filing and saw piercing which will enable each person to create their own patterns and shapes with wax.
Participants are encouraged to create a selection of wax designs and will be asked to select one design to later sand cast. This design will be used to form a pendant.
This design will be used to form a pendant. Participants are invited to create a pendant no more than 25mm in width and no more than 30mm in length dependant on the weight of silver used. This will involve a front facing design and will consist of a flat surface on the back.
A demonstration will show the process of sand casting, showing how to melt and pour silver by hand into the sand mould created.
During the weekend, participants will have the opportunity to repeat the process should there be any failed attempts.
Next, participants will be taught how to solder a ‘jump ring’ onto their final pendant designs. These are primarily used to allow a chain to be attached.
Following this, participants will be shown a number of finishing techniques involving filing and polishing.
