Join us on this short course where you will dive into the world of data analysis, modelling and visualisation. The course will help you leverage the benefits of data analytics for business and explore the opportunities that different technologies and software present. Develop your skill-set, leverage more value from your data and upskill in analytics with this 10 week course.
This short course aims to provide an understanding of the principles of data and business analytics. Using real-life scenarios, you will learn to apply analytics processes, algorithms and methodologies to business problems using data to make informed business decisions.
We will provide you with the skills and knowledge required to understand the data analytics and data mining lifecycle (CRISP-DM). You will explore the roles and responsibilities in business analytics and learn how develop a data-driven strategy. A broad overview of key concepts and principles including descriptive analytics and predictive analytics will be provided. You will develop the ability to present data in an appropriate format for a range of audiences.
This short course can be completed in 10 weeks. Students are expected to take eight weeks to complete online materials and then work on a real-world project for themselves or their company/ organisation.
On completion of this course, students are expected to be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of CRISP-DM and all stages of the Data Mining Life Cycle
- Analyse a range of data types
- Approach business problems using data analytics
- Apply business analytics tools to generate business insights
- Present data in an appropriate format for a range of stakeholders

Identified and created in collaboration with industry, these 15-credit online courses are designed to enhance employability for individuals and organisations looking to upskill their workforce.

Learning Methods
There is a short online induction session where you can get to know your classmates and learn more about the aims and structure of the course. You will then embark on approximately 8 weeks of study delivered online. Teaching is broken down into short manageable lessons (approximately 40 minutes) and activities (approximately 2hrs per week) that you can study in your own time and at your own pace. While studying online you will have access to your tutor, who will be able to answer any questions you may have.
As you progress through the course, you will be supported through online tutorials where you can discuss your progress with your tutor and class-mates, before looking at how to put your data analytics skills and knowledge into action through a project of your own. At the end of the ten week course, you will submit an applied data analytics coursework.
To complete this course you will need access to a modern laptop or computer running an up-to-date operating system and a reliable internet connection.
Assessment
Typically students are assessed through a portfolio assessment.
Independent Study
The majority of this course is completed through online independent study, it is expected that you will spend approximately 3-5 hours per week working on this module. Whilst you are studying independently you won’t be alone. Your tutor will be there to support you throughout the module.

This short course has been developed by a team with extensive academic and professional experience in Business and Data Analytics. The course team bring experience from Business Analytics, Information Management, Communications, Marketing and Computing Science. Having previously developed the MSc Business Analytics and with extensive professional and academic experience in related areas, the course team brings a wealth of knowledge to this exciting growth area.
There are no pre-requisites for this course.

Fee-waiver places
If you are domiciled in Scotland, you may be eligible for a fee-waiver place, meaning you can study for free.
To be eligible for funding, you need to have 'settled status' in Scotland, with no restrictions on how long you can stay here. For example, this can be from birth or Right to Remain visa.
Eligibility is assessed on application and further evidence may be required.
All other applicants
Applicants who are not eligible for a fee-waiver place can pay to study the course - £500 for the entire course
