Lifelong Learning for Effective Clinical Practice
This module will cement your foundations of academic learning associated to your healthcare practice, demonstrating evidence based critical reflection, thinking and writing.
The is an ideal module to prepare students who have had a gap in learning back in, or in for the first time to the current expectations of learning at university in the 21st century. Students are expected to stop, take stock of where they have been, are presently and intend to go next on their lifelong learning journey. The are carefully facilitated and supported in a student centred way to become more self-aware around their professional learning, planning their own next steps, reflecting on their learning approaches and professional judgements; all in comparison to contemporary evidence and current healthcare policy drivers.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
- Critically reflect on professional learning in their career to date.
- Analyse personal and professional objectives in relation to current service needs and sign up to a learning agreement.
- Discuss the personal and professional skills required to achieve a personal and professional development plan.
- Examine types of evidence used to justify decisions and professional judgments in healthcare.
- Critically discuss the factors that influence being a professional in the context of current healthcare.

Learning Methods
This module runs over 10 weeks, 8 weeks online delivery and 2 weeks preparation of academic summative assessment.
There are 4 interactive topic learning guides to direct students learning, leading into 4 online asynchronous discussion forums to facilitate students sharing their learning and help build a learning community. This module is delivered online through the University's Virtual Learning Environment, Moodle.
There are 4 live MS Team based contact days 9:30 - 15:30, where lectures are recorded, but interactive small group sessions are not recorded to allow freedom of discussion.
Additionally there are 2 x 1 hour drop in sessions during the module delivery.
Recorded lectures and weblinks to applicable videos further support topic learning and different preferred ways of learning.
Independent Study
You are expected to undertake at least 15 hours per week of independent study.
Staff delivering on this course
There are three members of academic staff delivering this module. They come from differing clinical care backgrounds, the module leader from acute care and module team members from acute /primary care. All have extensive healthcare teaching experience, and both lead different educational routes within the RGU School of Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedic Practice portfolio.
Assessment
Assessment is a 3,000 word written assignment.
Academic Support
The Inclusion Centre advises and supports students who disclose a sensory or mobility impairment, chronic medical condition, mental health issue, dyslexia and other specific learning differences. Applicants are encouraged to arrange a pre-entry visit to discuss any concerns and to view the facilities.
Study Skills Support
The Study Support Team provides training and support to all students in:
- Academic writing
- Study skills (note taking, exam techniques, time management, presentation)
- Maths and statistics
- English language
- Information technology support
This module could help healthcare professionals with an interest in lifelong learning, step back into academic learning.
This module is suitable for registered nurses, who must be registered with the Nursing & Midwifery Council or Health Care Professions Council (or international equivalent), with associated English language proficiency.
