Design management involves organising innovative activity and constructing frameworks within which design takes place. In that context, this course introduces to you design management as a process that encompasses creativity and innovation. With project management tools to equip professionals with the right range of skills to tackle design management projects.
This course has been designed to develop a broad professional working understanding of management issues relating to the design process in relation to the built environment. It includes current theories of design process, contemporary applications, the stimulus for change and relationships with procurement systems. Information and planning systems for the structuring and management of the design process in a range of situations including single discipline practice, multi-disciplinary consultancy and production organisations. Team dynamics and group working, the importance of communication in the design process; including dealing with customer and production interfaces, decision making methods relating to groups and finally the management of resources in the design process. All of these elements will challenge and broaden your current understanding of Design Management.
To develop a broad professional working understanding of management issues relating to the design process in relation to the built environment and through your engagement and participation in this course you will be able to demonstrate your ability to:
- Explain the determinants, generators and constraints impinging on the design process, of information systems applicable to the effective provision of the design process, planning and management issues relating to these, and of human resources, interaction and organisation issues central to the effective delivery of design.
- Evaluate the specific aspects of the management process relevant to the built environment.
- Critically appraise and evaluate the effectiveness of the processes of design development and management.

Learning Methods
You will study within a global group of professionals employed within the various construction industries. There are weekly opportunities to enter into online discussion forums to discuss topics and exchange views and experiences, thereby providing a broader worldly interpretation and application of the knowledge provided. A series of study guides will lead you. All learning material, activities, and reading resources are available online via the module.
You will learn via our online virtual learning environment, CampusMoodle which provides you with lectures and course materials and allows you to study from any location.
As well as your Tutor, you will also have your own dedicated e-advisor who will assist you in accessing and engaging with the online material.
Independent Study
All learning material is provided and students will be expected to work through this material independently before participating in discussion with fellow students, completing activities and undertaking assessments.

The Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment is one of the three oldest of its kind in the UK, with a heritage that extends back to the 19th Century.
Whilst we are proud of our history we have continually evolved our offering to the needs of our professional areas today, combining innovative thinking with new technologies and contemporary practice across all aspects of the design and construction of building, public space and cities. Tutors involved with this short course have teaching and research interests in: Architecture Product Design, Design and Decision Making Processes for multidisciplinary teams, Collaboration Management and Conflicts Analysis: Construction and O&G Applications for Teams’ Efficiency, Building Information Modelling and pre-BIM stages.
Dr Salman has undertaken high profile research activities, including membership of editorial boards, contributing to national and international forums and expert practitioner groups, as well as presentation of her original work. She had the privilege to work with the European Commission as an expert reviewer. Dr Salman PhD work has been published in Design Studies journal; a leading Interdisciplinary peer-reviewed Journal of Design Research.
Assessment
The module will be assessed through an online group work project.
