Leadership in Health and Social Care
This module sets out to enable students to critically reflect on leadership within the context of health and social care.
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
- Critically discuss the concepts of self-awareness and emotional intelligence as foundations for effective leadership.
- Appraise a range of leadership theories.
- Analyse the facilitation of collaborative working within the sector.
- Critically evaluate evidence, policies, and strategies in relation to leadership outcomes.
- Critique the role of leadership and change principles to improve health and social care outcomes.

Learning Methods
This module is delivered online via our Virtual Learning Environment Moodle.
The module runs over one semester there are 5 interactive topic learning guides to direct students learning. These lead into 5 online asynchronous discussion / activity forums to facilitate students sharing their learning and help build a learning community.
Recorded lectures support learning further.
Weblinks to applicable videos further support topic learning and different preferred ways of learning.
There are 5 live and recorded Webinars using Microsoft Teams. Each lasting 2 hours every second week on a set afternoon 14:00 - 16:00 where students can come together with their colleagues and module team.
Independent Study
It is recommended that student undertake 8 hours of private study per week.
Assessment
This module is assessed through an individual live PowerPoint presentation via Microsoft Teams to one or two module teaching staff. Students will be graded based on that presentation.

Academic Support
The Inclusion Centre advises and supports students who disclose a sensory or mobility impairment, chronic medical condition, mental health issue, dyslexia and other specific learning differences. Applicants are encouraged to arrange a pre-entry visit to discuss any concerns and to view the facilities.

All online learning students, benefit from using our collaborative virtual learning environment, CampusMoodle. You will be provided with 24/7 online access to your learning material and resources, along with the ability to interact with your class members and tutors for discussion and support.
Study Skills Support
The Study Support Team provides training and support to all students in:
- Academic writing
- Study skills (note taking, exam techniques, time management, presentation)
- Maths and statistics
- English language
- Information technology support
Library Support
The Library offers support for your course, including the books, eBooks, and journals you will need. We also offer online reading lists for many modules, workshops and drop-ins on searching skills and referencing, and much more.
Career Prospects
Credit from this module may contribute to the MSc Healthcare Leadership, MSc Advancing Healthcare Practice and the MSc Advanced Practice.
Standard Entry Requirements
This course is suitable for those working in health and social care, including national health services, care organisations, private health organisations, care homes, local authorities, government health roles, occupational health, and non-governmental and voluntary organisations with a care focus in the UK and internationally.
The minimum entry requirement for this course will normally be an honours degree at 2.2 or its equivalent with appropriate health-related work experience.
For this course, we also invite applications from those who have the required honours degree in subject areas not related to health if you are working in the care sector.
Applicants who do not meet the standard entry qualifications, but do have a professional qualification, combined with a minimum of two years of relevant work experience may be considered, and would be invited to an asynchronous online, interview process.
English Language Requirements
Applicants must satisfy the University's general admission requirements to courses as contained in Academic Academic Regulation A2: Admission and Enrolment, including proficiency to a minimum standard in the English language.
