This short course will enable you to extend your scope of practice to include the use of injection therapy. This course is designed to enable you to develop an understanding of the key competencies relating to injection therapy including clinical knowledge, decision-making, pharmacology and the evidence base.
This module has been designed in collaboration with NHS and specialist practitioners.
Part A
On campus delivery topics
- Clinical knowledge: functional and surface anatomy
- Clinical decision-making: principles of assessment and diagnosis and evidence based
- Principles of pharmacology
- Practical application of injections for peripheral lesions
- Risks and benefits of injection therapy
- Communication, record keeping and medico-legal requirements.
Part B
Anatomy Lab
This will be a visit to an anatomy lab to practice needling technique on cadavers, as well as developing problem-solving skills.
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
- Demonstrate refined knowledge and understanding of musculoskeletal anatomy
- Critically evaluate the need for intervention with injection therapy, demonstrating clinical reasoning and diagnostic skills
- Discuss the contraindications for injection therapy
- Demonstrate and justify safe and effective aseptic techniques in the application of injection therapy

Course Dates
- Part A - 28, 29 & 30 August 2024 on campus.
- Part B - 13 September at Anatomy Lab (Dundee).
- Part C - 24 February 2025 final examination on campus, date to be confirmed.
Activity Summary
Part A: on campus
- Approximately 20 students per group
- 2.5 days on-campus with practical workshops and tutorials
Part B: anatomy lab
- Approximately 10 students per group
- Half day visit to practice needling cadavers and problem-solving
Intermodular work
- Complete a minimum of 10 supervised injections with log sheets
Part C: on campus final examination
- Online multiple-choice question examination
- Justified observed structured practical examination.
Assessment
This course is assessed through a written exam, portfolio and a practical skills assessment.
Independent Study
This course is completed through independent study. It is expected that you will spend a minimum of 120 hours study over the duration of the module, including the preparation and submission of your assessment. Your academic tutor will be there to support you through the module..

Prospects
- A minimum of three years post-registration experience.
- Provide evidence of current registration with the relevant UK professional body e.g. HCPC/GMC/NMC.
- Be practicing in a role, or imminently looking to move into a role, in which musculoskeletal injection could be used and be able to access the relevant medicines through a setting-appropriate lawful medicines framework in order to offer injection therapy.
- Written confirmation from an approved supervisor which should include a doctor and/or qualified injection practitioner to supervise a minimum of 10 injections in clinical practice.

The following course-related costs are not included in the course fees:
- Travel costs: Will vary depending on starting location but students will need travel to campus for Part A and C. Part B will be a half day visit to anatomy lab in Tayside.
