Facial Aesthetics: Advanced Theoretical Perspectives
This module is designed to equip registered healthcare professionals, whether currently working in aesthetics or aspiring to enter the field, with a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental and theoretical principles of contemporary aesthetic practice.
The module will focus on four key areas:
- Anatomy and Physiology
- Theoretical principles of assessment and consultation,
- Ethics and Regulation,
- Evidence-Based Practice
Students will gain an in-depth understanding of advanced facial anatomy, addressing both age-related and non-age-related clinical presentations.
By examining real-world case studies, students will be encouraged to critically consider the core ethical issues and regulatory requirements for today’s aesthetic industry.
The course will be delivered through online tutorials.
The sessions will cover:
- Facial anatomy, aesthetic principles, and the aging process
- Appropriate methods of patient assessment to personalise care whilst mitigating risk.
- Theoretical understanding of contemporary aesthetic treatments and prescribing requirements.
- Professional standards including ethical and regulatory considerations relevant to aesthetic practice.
- Quality and relevance of evidence to practice effectively within a clinical setting.
Learning Methods
This module is delivered entirely online, using the University’s virtual learning environment, Moodle, offering a dynamic and engaging learning experience. Students will benefit from a variety of teaching methods, including recorded sessions
All modules are credit rated and can be worth 5, 10, 15 or 30 credit points. This equates to the number of study hours required within the module, for example 50 hours for 5 credit points, 300 hours for 30 credit points. The SCQF modules can range from level 7 (undergraduate) through to level 11 (Master's) on the Scottish Credit Qualification Framework (SCQF). You can undertake individual modules or build them up to gain an exit award.

Activity Summary
- Tutorial - 15 students per group, 1 hour per week
- Independent Study - 10 hours per week
Independent Study
Students should allow 10 hours per week over twelve weeks for independent study. Independent study may include engagement with teaching activities such as discussion forums, quizzes, topic workbooks or recorded lectures.
Assessment
The students are assessed via an online quiz.

Module delivery will by lecturers with experience in the field of Aesthetics. There will be additional input where appropriate from multi-professional subject specialists and industry experts.
Credit from this module may be attractive to those working in the Aesthetic industry and seeking to apply for a non-medical prescribing course that requires evidence of level 11 study in the field of Aesthetics.

Whilst this module is theory-based, knowledge and experience of injection techniques would be advantageous.
