This Art Weekender provides an opportunity to learn how to print directly onto both clay and ceramics. Throughout the duration of the weekend, you will be introduced to a variety of print techniques involving stencilling, stamping, relief printing, mono printing and screen printing. Additionally, you will learn how to transfer pre-printed images onto ceramics using decals.
During this Art Weekender you will be taught the foundations of clay, clay bodies and clay preparation. As part of this you will explore handing building techniques such as pinching, coiling and slab building. Through these techniques you will experiment with shaping, building and adapting different forms with the aim to construct one finished sculptural form or one piece of tableware to print onto.
Whilst developing your understanding of clay, you will be taught how to make clay stamps by carving plaster, a process that will allow you to test indenting different designs or textures into clay. In addition to this you are invited to explore a range of sponge printing techniques typically used to create repeat patterns.
Following this, you are invited to learn a variety of printing techniques. These involve stencilling and mono printing onto clay using a mix of paper, plaster and decorative slips. Additionally, you will learn how to print from photocopies of your own pre-printed imagery using underglaze combined with toner besides learning how to transfer pre–printed images onto ceramics using decals.
Furthermore, you will be introduced to screen printing in order to produce underglaze and onglaze transfers during this you will be taught how to apply this process onto both clay and ceramic surfaces.
What’s more, you will also be provided with a demonstration of relief techniques such as wood block or lino printing that can be explored further independently.

Learning Methods
This course will be delivered on campus over Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 - 16:00 each day.
Participants are asked to bring their own imagery to print from this can include; drawings, photographs, or books for example. We ask these are no larger than A5 in size. We ask participants provide a black and white photocopy of their own imagery, printed onto paper prior to participation. If participants do not have access to print facilities, black and white photocopies of participants imagery can be made during the workshop.
As part of the workshop participants are provided with the option to print onto both clay and ceramics. We ask participants who wish to print onto ceramics please bring their own pre-made ceramics/purchased ceramics to print onto. Please note ceramic pieces must already be glazed in order to apply onglaze decals onto.
Alternatively glazed, test tiles will be provided to enable experimentation in the event participants are unable to provide their own pre-made/purchased ceramics.
Participants are encouraged to also bring additional materials they wish to experiment printing with.
Activity Summary
- Minimum of 8 students, maximum of 12 in the group
- 10 hours of teaching in total over 2 days. 10:00 - 16:00 each day with a 60 minute lunch break 12:30 - 13:30. Please bring your own lunch, tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided.

Staff Delivering on this Course
Often referred to as a ‘Nomadic Ceramicist’, Kevin Andrew Morris is motivated by an investigation of his own family heritage and material culture. His work engages with concepts of craft, material and place. Based in Aberdeen, Morris exhibits work both nationally and internationally, working with a range of artists, institutions, and various public projects.
Opportunities to travel, research and make work internationally are important to him as are opportunities to work locally. He considers participation and engagement an opportunity for him to learn new skills, feeding the development of his own creative practice.
