Cameron Milne – MSc Digital Marketing
Graduating this year with a master’s distinction, Cameron originally donned a black gown in 2019 having studied digital media before returning last year to further develop his professional skills and portfolio. Between the two courses he worked at his local Morrisons as a Click and Collect Team Leader, one of the many keyworkers who continued throughout the pandemic.
“The pandemic began just after my graduation which made it very difficult to find a job. Quite a few of my friends who had recently been employed were even made redundant due to cost cutting measures.
“After a year of lockdowns, I decided to go back to university to study digital marketing so that I wasn’t wasting time during the pandemic and could come out of it in a better position for future employment.
“After studying digital media I had a lot of technical production skills which stood me in a good position for content creation. Therefore, the obvious choice was to build on these existing skills and study the theory of how best to use digital content.”
Cameron’s master’s in digital marketing contained industry-specific work with genuine clients in the North East, an invaluable experience which he credits as really helping to widen his range of skills.
“The highlight of the course was getting to work with several live clients such as Greyhope Bay, Staxx and Spree Aberdeen. This provided an opportunity to work to industry standards and create a wide range of work to specific briefs while receiving feedback from lecturers and industry professionals.
“These clients also provided an opportunity to develop and test a number of different strategies and create the necessary digital content to go alongside them. The postgraduate degree also provided me with the opportunity to develop in areas which I had little confidence.
“For one module on my course we had to create a movie trailer for a film based on a book which didn’t already have a film adaptation, having to script, costume, film and edit the footage ourselves. The book that we chose was Mr. Men and led to me and my friend running around in a field dressed as Mr Bump and Mr Tickle…”
Having completed his School of Creative and Cultural Business degree earlier this year and clearly grown more than comfortable with life on campus, Cameron has now undertaken an internship at RGU’s Entrepreneurship and Innovation Group (EIG).
“The work at EIG has given me an opportunity to gain further real industry experience; work with a very supportive team to create and execute digital marketing campaigns across a range of platforms; and practice skills I feel less confident in such as photography and filming.”
Still only 24, Cameron’s extensive work portfolio, coupled with his degree success and passion to always do more stands him in good stead for the future.
“My time at RGU has prepared me for my next step onto the career ladder by giving me an opportunity to develop my already existing skills; providing me with the knowledge of how best to use them; and giving me the confidence in my own abilities to ultimately pursue a career in digital marketing.”
