External Examiners

The function of the External Examiner is crucial to all aspects of the assessment process and your presence ensures the objectivity of an Assessment Board, comparability of awards and standards in the national context, and the fair and equitable treatment of students.

As part of your appointment you will be invited to attend an induction at the university. This will involve meeting with key staff within the School.

In addition, the key and background documents which will form an important aspect of your induction and we ask that you familiarise yourself with these, particularly the 'key' documents.

Academic Regulations 

The University's Academic Regulations apply to all credit rated provision within the University.

Regulation A4: Assessment and Recommendations of Assessment Boards

The Regulation you will become most familiar with during your term of office. This Regulation includes information on: the University's A-F grading scheme; criteria for Honours, Distinction and Merit; permissible number of assessment opportunities; extenuating circumstances and assessment; and recommendations available to the Assessment Board.

Regulation A5: External Examiners

You will have received some information from this section prior to your commencement. This Regulation details the authority and responsibilities, including administrative responsibilities, of the External Examiner.

Academic Quality Handbook - Section 4: External Examiner Arrangements 

This section of the Handbook details the procedures surrounding the external examining process, including the approval of instruments of assessment, sampling of work, attendance at Assessment Boards and submission of the Annual Report Form.

AQH 4 - External Examiner Annual Report

The Academic Quality Officer will email you an electronic copy of the Annual Report Form around May/June time. In the event you miss the email then you can pick up a copy of the form from the above link. We accept both hard copy and electronic submissions of Reports. All Examiner Annual Reports should be submitted to the university no later than 4 weeks after the first diet/PgDip Assessment Board.

AQH 4 - External Examiner Expenses and Claim Form

The Academic Quality Officer will email you a copy of the External Examiner Expenses and Fee Claim form. The completed form, with receipts, should be returned directly to the relevant School at RGU.

The Assessment Policy applies to all credit rates provision within the University.

The University operates a Fit to Sit Policy which means that if you undertake an assessment then you are declaring yourself well enough to do so.

The Course Information Database provides access to all Course Specifications and Module Descriptors from across the University's provision.

These have been developed by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education in liaison with the sector and they set out what achievement is expected according to level and subject.

This section of the Quality Code has been designed to ensure that external examining can operate in a way which is transparent, rigorous, and as consistent as possible across all UK higher education institutions, taking into account institutions' autonomy and differences in their mission, size, organisational structures and range of provision.

The SCQF is the Framework used throughout Scotland and the University's degrees comply with the Framework. Information on Level Descriptors and credit accumulation can all be found within the Framework.
