Degree Link Student Stories
Isla Gillies
BA (Hons) Fashion Management Student.
What subject are you currently studying/did you most recently study at university? What persuaded you to choose this option?
I study BA (Hons) Fashion Management – this course naturally appealed to me because it combines all of my interests in the fashion industry.
What course did you study at college, and which college did you attend?
I studied the HND Fashion Design and Manufacture at Glasgow Clyde College.
What did you find easy and what did you find difficult about making the transition from college to university?
My transition from college to university had its challenges. Before studying at RGU, I had never been to Aberdeen, so moving to a new city where I didn’t know many people was difficult.
My course at college was mostly practical based, so to enter 3rd year of university where the majority of the work was academically written coursework that had to be referenced appropriately, was a big step up.
Due to the restrictions in place during COVID-19, most of my classes were online, so not being able to meet my peers and lecturers felt quite isolating. Thankfully, on-campus teaching became more frequent as time passed, and so getting to meet my peers and lecturers in-person helped me to get through the transitional phase.
WHY RGU? WHAT WAS IT THAT ATTRACTED YOU TO THE UNIVERSITY?
RGU was really appealing to me because it has a great campus, and I heard great things about studying at the university from students who had previously studied here.
How would you rate your experience at RGU?
I would rate my experience very highly, because I have very much enjoyed my time here at the university, even in the midst of submissions and deadlines, and the challenges they bring with. Reflecting back, I notice a progression in my work from my very first submission to my most recent, and I can only thank the university for the support offered.
HOW DID RGU SUPPORT YOU IN YOUR JOURNEY? DID YOU USE ANY OF THE SUPPORT SERVICES AVAILABLE TO YOU?
During my studies at RGU, I have been supported by my lecturers and my peers. I have also attend the online sessions from the library staff, as well as the Study Skills department for extra support, which I found particularly helpful when going over how to research and how to reference.
Would you recommend the route you chose and specifically the college to university pathway?
I would recommend the route I chose because I got to experience and learn so much – the college side of things were more practical based, and the university side of things were more academic based and prepared me for employment post-university.
What are your future plans?
I currently work at RGU in the School of Pharmacy and Life Sciences.
How has RGU helped you achieve your goals?
RGU has helped me achieve my goals by preparing me for employment and developing my knowledge and skill set. The progression I have seen in my own work has also helped me to build my own confidence.
