Degree Link Student Stories

Holly Marwick

Sir Ian Wood Building

BA (Hons) Applied Social Sciences graduate.

What subject are you currently studying/did you most recently study at university? What persuaded you to choose this option?

I studied BA (Hons) Applied Social Sciences. I have a deep interest in the sociology of the world, with my main interests lying in the stigmatisation of certain cities and countries, alongside what causes this stigma. I also have a deep interest in areas of global development – these topics are key areas of research at RGU, and so I felt this was the best option for me.

What course did you study at college, and which college did you attend?

I studied the HND Applied Social Sciences course at North East Scotland College.

What did you find easy and what did you find difficult about making the transition from college to university?

I felt extremely supported and had a foundation of knowledge from college. I felt I had a deep understanding of what to expect at university as the college lecturers and curriculum had prepared me well.

The difficulty within the transition was caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic, where we moved online, and I did not personally know my peers and lecturers.

WHY RGU? WHAT WAS IT THAT ATTRACTED YOU TO THE UNIVERSITY?

I enjoy the modern take of the university, the values it stands for, and I felt it would support me during my studies – which it did. I felt I received a great wealth of knowledge studying here, as there is an extremely positive approach to learning and excellent employment opportunities, which has led to me being employed at the university after I completed my degree.

How would you rate your experience at RGU?

My experiences of RGU, to begin with, were limited through a screen due to the pandemic. However, when we were allowed in person teaching, it was one of the greatest experiences to be surrounded by people with a common interest and goal, and to be taught by lecturers who get so much joy out of their subjects.

HOW DID RGU SUPPORT YOU IN YOUR JOURNEY? DID YOU USE ANY OF THE SUPPORT SERVICES AVAILABLE TO YOU?

I used the counselling services throughout my fourth year, and found this extremely beneficial.

Would you recommend the route you chose and specifically the college to university pathway?

would highly recommend this path – I found that college prepared me for life at university, specifically RGU, and I met so many friends who were on the same path.

I also felt we had a more in-depth knowledge at college, since we were a smaller cohort, so we had more time with our lecturers.

What are your future plans?

I currently work at RGU in the School of Pharmacy and Life Sciences.

How has RGU helped you achieve your goals?

RGU allowed me to gain confidence and allowed me to grow as an individual – it allowed me to put myself out there into the world.
