From Cells to Celebrations: 10 Years of Biomedical Science Day
The Biomedical Science course team and research students in the School of Pharmacy, Applied Sciences and Public Health (SPASPH) proudly teamed up with TechFest Aberdeen to celebrate Biomedical Science Day 2026—marking a fantastic 10-year milestone with a vibrant and inspiring programme of activities.
This special day shines a spotlight on the incredible work of biomedical scientists, whose expertise sits at the very heart of healthcare. It’s also an opportunity to spark curiosity in the next generation and showcase the exciting world of science in a fun, interactive way—something our team is deeply passionate about.
Inspiring the Scientists of Tomorrow
Research consistently highlights the importance of introducing science at an early age. When children engage with STEM activities, they begin to see themselves as future scientists, building confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong interest in discovery.
With this in mind, our team was proud to host “From Cells to Celebrations: 10 Years of Biomedical Science Day” at TechFest Aberdeen—an event designed to bring biomedical science to life for families and young learners across the community.
Hands-On Science in Action
Our stand was buzzing with energy as visitors took part in a range of creative and educational activities designed to make science accessible and exciting:
Disease Detectives: Evidence in Every Tissue
Young scientists explored patient tissue samples and used anatomical models to uncover clues about how the body works—thinking like real biomedical scientists.
"What's in Your Blood"?
A hands-on, visual activity where participants built their own “blood” to learn about its different components and their roles in keeping us healthy.
Build a Bug (Playdough Edition)
Creativity met microbiology as children designed their own microbes while learning about pathogens and infection.
DNA Bracelet Making
A colourful and creative way to explore genetics, helping participants understand the building blocks of life through hands-on learning.
Each activity was designed not only to educate, but to inspire curiosity, creativity, and confidence in science and the enthusiasm from attendees showed just how impactful these experiences can be. Dr Jenny Macaskill shared:
"Championing the excitement of pathology and inspiring the next generation to engage with science is at the heart of what I do."
Continuing the Celebration
The celebrations don’t stop there! To further mark Biomedical Science Day, Biomedical Science staff are hosting a public engagement staff at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (ARI) on Thursday 4 June.
This event provides another opportunity to highlight the essential role biomedical scientists play in diagnosing disease and supporting patient care every day.
At the Heart of Healthcare
Biomedical scientists are often behind the scenes, but their work is critical—from analysing blood samples to diagnosing disease and guiding treatment decisions. Events like these help bring that work into the spotlight while connecting science with the community.
We’re incredibly proud to celebrate 10 years of Biomedical Science Day and to continue inspiring future scientists right here in Aberdeen.
