This Black History Month, we're "Honouring our Communities" by celebrating the people that make RGU such a diverse and welcoming place to study and work.
In this spotlight, Associate Professor Kyari Yates reflects on the importance of family, faith, friendship and workplace connections, and shares why creating a culture of respect, belonging and continuous learning matters all year round.
This year's Black History Month theme is "Honouring Our Communities". What does community mean to you?
For me, community means the people I do life with and who provide me with support, structure, and care.
Which community or communities have shaped your journey the most?
My family, church community, friends and work colleagues have been very influential in shaping my journey.
What helps create a sense of belonging for you personally, and at RGU?
Personally, I value mutual respect, showing concern for others and honesty especially where an individual can be true to who they are and feel supported. These are attributes I see at RGU.
What is one thing you would like people to learn or reflect on during Black History Month?
To move beyond the hurdles and challenges that most black people face in contributing to and progressing in society and to celebrate the resilience of a unique and vibrant community. Honouring the community shouldn’t be only during Black History Month in October each year, but should be a culture all year round.
What are some actions people can take to help create a more inclusive community?
Engage with the community, listen and be humble to ask and learn from the community where possible. The RGU library has several helpful resources for a start.

Dr Kyari Yates is an Associate Professor in the School of Pharmacy, Applied Sciences and Public Health (SPASPH). Outside of work he enjoys spending time with family, watching basketball and football, and going on walks.
