RGU success at prestigious annual CICES event

By Michele Victoria, Lecturer, Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment - 12 November 2024

As Chair of the Sustainability Committee of the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (CICES), it was a privilege to launch the White Paper on Sustainability at the CICES Annual Dinner at the iconic King's College in Cambridge on 20 September 2024.

It is a topic that is close to my heart and I am glad that I was able to play a crucial role in shaping the White Paper which is expected to be an evergreen document that will be updated as the industry involves.

The icing on the cake was to see my own student, Campbell Davidson, winning one of the prestigious Robin Jones awards in the category of 'Sustainability and Innovation'. Overall, it was a rewarding and slightly surreal experience!

Campbell graduated from the BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management course with a First Class Honours in Summer 2024. I nominated Campbell's dissertation under the category of: Outstanding student/trainee/apprentice who has demonstrated a commitment to promoting, adopting or developing new and innovative ways of working within the profession – for example by adopting innovative working practices which support the uptake of new digital tools or collaboration, or through their dissertation.

His dissertation, titled 'The Changing Role of The Quantity Surveyor in the North Sea Energy Transition’, shed light into the underexplored quantity surveyor's role in the North Sea energy transition where Campbell found that the core skillset of QS remains the same, but job titles change across sectors.

Campbell highlighted the specific challenges of the energy sector to be mainly revolving around contractual and supply chain complexities, where soft skills such as negotiation are considered important. He also proposed recommendations to those who are looking to transition into the energy sector from construction.
