Everything you need to know about RGU's seventh Startup Accelerator
RGU's Startup Manager Aisha Kasim shares details of the newly launched Startup Accelerator.
Can you tell us more about what the Startup Accelerator is?
For those who are not yet familiar with it, the RGU Startup Accelerator is Robert Gordon University’s flagship startup and entrepreneurial development programme. Now running in our seventh year, we support early-stage innovative business ideas from all sectors and have supported the creation of over 130 new startup ventures.
This year, all paths lead to Aberdeen, meaning the Startup Accelerator is open to anyone anywhere who intends to start a business in Aberdeen City. What makes this year’s programme different is you do not need to have an RGU link to apply, nor do you need to be a university student or staff member, so share this with a friend!
What benefits do participants get?
Programme benefits include:
- At least £1,000 equity free seed funding + thousands more available in cash prizes.
- Months of experienced entrepreneurial skills and development training.
- Flexible hybrid sessions in evenings & weekends.
- Access to free city-centre co-working space.
- Dedicated industry mentorship and guidance.
- For International applicants potential Innovator Founder Visa Support.
- Support for charities & social enterprises.
What would you say is the perfect participant profile?
We welcome all participant personalities and profiles in the RGU Accelerator. Often, the cross-disciplinary aspect and diversity of gender, cultures and backgrounds is where the magic of innovation lies. In terms of budding entrepreneur traits, enthusiasm, proactivity and willingness to learn from mistakes is key! For more general tips, please do answer all the required questions in the application form and we do welcome third sector applications from charities.
What are you most excited for about this year's programme?
With the programme being open to all this year, I am most looking forward to the range of backgrounds, and experiences that will make up this cohort 7. The programme being open to all has been made possible with funding through the UK Government and Aberdeen City Council. I am looking forward to the ideas this more inclusive programme will attract, along with working to develop those early-stage innovations helping to assist economic development in the Aberdeen region.
Why do you think staff at RGU should take part?
RGU staff in particular should take part as the Accelerator is an excellent, pragmatic entrepreneurial development opportunity that is flexible around work. Over the years, we have had RGU staff take part in the process and each have shared how beneficial the experience has been for numerous reasons such as gaining entrepreneurial skills and confidence, or even often for more personal reasons.
