Tanjerul Islam Tanim
MSc Engineering Management student from Bangladesh.
What attracted you to your course at RGU?
I chose to study Engineering Management at RGU because RGU's strong reputation in engineering, coupled with its focus on practical, industry-relevant learning, aligns perfectly with my career aspirations. I'm also passionate about both engineering and management, and excited at the chance to combine technical skills with leadership and strategic thinking.
While affordability was a consideration, I prioritized a high-quality education that would provide me with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in the field. RGU's strong academic programs and experienced faculty were key factors in my decision.
Before coming to RGU, what were your expectations? And now that you are here, have your experiences differed?
Before coming to RGU, I imagined a sprawling, traditional university campus with grand buildings and expansive green spaces. While the campus is certainly impressive, it's more compact than I initially anticipated.
However, what truly surprised me was the quality of the classroom facilities. The modern, well-equipped lecture halls and labs have exceeded my expectations. They provide an excellent learning environment that fosters engagement and creativity.
What’s the best thing about being an RGU student?
For me, the best thing about being an RGU student is the supportive and inclusive community. The lecturers and staff are always willing to help, and there are plenty of opportunities to get involved in extracurricular activities and meet new people.
Describe your favourite memory of RGU so far?
One of my favourite memories at RGU so far was during a group project. We were working on a complex engineering problem and were facing a significant challenge. Instead of getting discouraged, we decided to approach the problem from a different angle, and after a long brainstorming session, we came up with a creative solution. The sense of accomplishment and teamwork we felt when we successfully presented our solution to the class was truly rewarding. We won an Amazon voucher for that brilliant project.
Tell us about your most challenging or rewarding project, assignment or module. What did you like or dislike about it and how has it helped you?
The Finance for Managers module was undoubtedly the most challenging course I've encountered at RGU. Coming from a non-business background, I initially struggled with complex financial concepts and calculations. The sheer volume of information and the rigorous assessments were daunting.
However, the challenge pushed me to step outside my comfort zone and develop new skills. I had to dedicate countless hours to understanding financial statements, budgeting, and investment analysis. The support from my lecturers and peers was invaluable, as they patiently explained complex concepts and provided helpful tips.
What is your favourite way to spend your time when you are not studying?
When I'm not studying, I enjoy exploring the city of Aberdeen. There are so many beautiful parks, historical sites, and cosy cafes to discover. I also love spending time with friends, whether it's grabbing a bite to eat, watching a movie, or simply chatting. Additionally, I find relaxation in creative pursuits like painting and writing. It's a great way to unwind and express myself.
