Oor Monsters invite young artists to join our scrap wood monster maker workshop held in Gray’s School of Art on Saturday 19 August. The 2-hour workshop explores the theme of construction whereby participants are encouraged to create and build a totem pole sculpture using scrap wooden materials. Once built, participants are invited to paint their individual wooden monster.
Local Artists Gabrielle Reith and Philip Thompson have been making work under the name Oor Monsters since 2009. Currently exhibited at the Music Hall in Aberdeen is Oor Monsters / Oor Future, an exhibition which highlights fundamental climate issues. The artists, also known as ‘Two Headed Monsters,’ encourage others to consider the impacts human activity has on climate change – both positive and negative. Work provokes others to think creatively and proactively with regards to climate action in their own lives.
For this 2-hour workshop, young artists are encouraged to draw inspiration from the exhibition and/or their own experiences.
Participants will then design and create their own individual monster using scrap wooden materials provided.
Materials will also include pre-cut and predrilled wooden parts, as well as a mix of fabrics, paper, dowels, screws and glue. In addition to the materials provided, participants are invited to bring found objects, such as broken toys, to incorporate as part of their sculpture.
Participants will be taught how to assemble different parts to aid the build of their own 'Oor Monsters family' totem pole.
Once individual sculptures have been built, young artists are invited to paint their wooden Monster using acrylic paints.
Once dry, Monsters can be collected the next day.
