During this two-hour workshop young artists are invited to explore the idea of texture by experimenting with surface decoration. To do this, participants will create their own abstract designs and will learn how to apply these to fabric via methods such as stitching and painting with textile pastes. Participants can add the designs they create to their own clothing or accessory.
The workshop encourages participants to explore surface decoration of textiles with the aim to rejuvenate an existing piece of clothing or accessory. Alternatively, participants can create a separate artwork by recycling their own existing textiles.
Participants will be asked to draw inspiration from abstract forms and shapes in order to create their own designs.
At the start of the workshop, participants will be shown a range of different stitching techniques with the aim to provide ideas of what could be incorporated into the participants own individual designs. Stitching techniques involve; seed, chain, backstitch, straight and woven. Through stitching an embroidery design, participants can choose the option to incorporate colour through choice of thread, as well as weight of line through both thickness of thread and build-up of stitches. This is in addition to both the pattern and texture that can be achieved through the participants choice of stitch. Examples of these will be shared.
Following this, participants are invited to build on their designs by adding extra layers of colour and texture through the application of textile print pastes. This mixed media approach will be carried out in a painterly manner with demonstrations and support provided throughout.
For the workshop, participants are asked to bring either a chosen piece of their own clothing, a selected textile item or textiles they wish to recycle into a mixed media artwork.
Examples could include an old t-shirt, dress/skirt, sweatshirt, cushion, pillowcase or fabric offcuts.

Paper Houses Design
Paper Houses Design was created by textile designer Mhairi Allan; a stationary collecting, orange obsessing, triangle loving designer, with a calling to geometrics. Her sketches are developed into surface patterns which are designed to transcend seasons. This local designer takes inspiration from man - made structures found within our surrounding landscape. She takes often - overlooked structures and creates bold and stylish patterns.
The products she designs are created to be both practical and versatile and are made for everyday use.
