This two-hour workshop invites young creatives to explore the idea of texture through the process of screen printing through which participants will learn how to print onto fabric. During the workshop participants will create a series of experimental prints using pre-exposed screens and stencils. Subsequently participants are invited to design and create their own individual tote bag to take home.
Taking place in our textile screen print workshop this 2 hr activity invites participants to learn the process of silk screen printing. This is a textiles technique whereby a mesh screen will be used to transfer ink onto material.
Each participant will be provided with their own silk screen to use for the duration of the workshop. Presented will also be a mix of pre-exposed screens, that display a variety of different textures, shapes and marks to support experimentation.
Participants are encouraged to draw inspiration from shapes to create their own paper stencils and will learn how to use these during both the design and print process.
Through experimentation, participants will gain an understanding of layering and will be taught how to print each individual layer in order to achieve different compositions and designs. Next, colour will be introduced using pigment printing pastes.
Participants will be asked to select a 3-colour palette to use throughout the workshop. This exercise invites participants to test their colour choice and encourages participants to analyse the different effects that be created though layering and mixing of the colours selected.
Subsequently, participants are invited to create a final design of their own and will print their design onto a single cotton tote bag provided. Following this, participants are invited to engage in a group crit.

Paper Houses Design
Paper Houses Design was created by textile designer Mhairi Allan; a stationary collecting, orange obsessing, triangle loving designer, with a calling to geometrics. Her sketches are developed into surface patterns which are designed to transcend seasons. This local designer takes inspiration from man - made structures found within our surrounding landscape. She takes often - overlooked structures and creates bold and stylish patterns.
The products she designs are created to be both practical and versatile and are made for everyday use.
