Oor Monsters invite participants to explore the theme of construction during this 2-hour workshop. During the playful session participants will learn how to construct a three-dimensional, wearable ‘Monster Mask’ or sculptural head piece using cardboard and adhesive. The workshop aims to encourage participants to respond creatively to everyday issues.
To start, Oor Monsters will show a short presentation which illustrates how artists Gabrielle Reith and Philip Thompson have been using low cost/recycled materials to create a wide range of expressive artworks that address everyday issues. The presentation aims to encourage those participating to respond creatively to everyday events that surround them.
From cars breaking down & blocked vacuum cleaners, to bigger issues like climate change or social injustice ‘Oor Monsters’ can be used to create artworks that subversively present viewers with fun creations, but with deeper meanings & contexts.
Each participant will be asked to consider a theme which is meaningful to them. This can be an everyday issue or a personal experience they wish to share.
Participants will be asked to use this theme as a base to design and create their own, individual ‘monster’. Each monster created will be transformed into a three-dimensional model that can be worn as a mask/head piece. Throughout the workshop participants will be shown how to cut and construct cardboard safely and will learn how glue and paper tape can be used to build each sculptural form.
