Structural Performance Prediction of Type V Composite Pressure Vessels via FEA & RSM

Summary
This project focuses on the design optimisation and structural assessment of Type V composite pressure vessels for high-pressure hydrogen storage using an integrated approach combining finite element analysis (FEA) and response surface methodology (RSM). Type V vessels, which are fully composite without metallic liners, offer significant advantages in terms of weight reduction and corrosion resistance, making them highly attractive for next-generation energy storage systems. However, their structural complexity and anisotropic behaviour present challenges in achieving optimal performance and safety.
Aims
The primary aim of this research is to develop a robust predictive framework that links design variables to structural responses, enabling efficient optimisation of Type V pressure vessels under high internal pressures (e.g. up to 700 bar). Key objectives include evaluating stress distribution, deformation, and failure indices, as well as identifying optimal design configurations that maximise strength while minimising weight.
Methods
The methodology will involve developing detailed finite element models of composite pressure vessels using appropriate material models for fibre-reinforced laminates. Critical design parameters such as winding angle, layer thickness, stacking sequence, and operating pressure will be systematically varied. A design of experiments (DoE) approach will be implemented, and the resulting simulation data will be used to construct response surface models that approximate the relationship between input variables and performance metrics.
Statistical techniques, including regression analysis and analysis of variance (ANOVA), will be applied to evaluate the significance of design parameters and their interactions. The developed RSM models will then be used for multi-objective optimisation, enabling rapid identification of optimal design solutions without the need for extensive computational effort. Validation of the models will be carried out through comparison with high-fidelity simulations and, where possible, published experimental data.
Outcomes
The outcomes of this research will contribute to advancing the design of lightweight, high-performance hydrogen storage systems, supporting the transition to sustainable energy technologies. The work is highly relevant to industries such as aerospace, automotive, and renewable energy, where safe and efficient storage of hydrogen is critical.
Candidate
The ideal candidate should have a background in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Materials Engineering, with knowledge of solid mechanics and numerical methods. Experience with FEA software (e.g. ANSYS) and an understanding of composite materials will be advantageous. Strong analytical skills and an interest in optimisation and sustainable engineering systems are essential.

Entry Requirements for Research Degrees
Normal entry requirements are a first or upper second class honours degree from a University of the United Kingdom, or from an overseas University, or degree equivalent qualification, subject to the approval of Robert Gordon University.
Applicants holding other qualifications shall be considered on their merits and in relation to the nature and scope of the proposed research programme.
Applicants will normally register for an MSc/PhD or MRes/PhD with transfer to PhD dependent on satisfactory progress. However, applicants who already possess a Master’s degree which includes a significant research component could be registered directly for a PhD, subject to a satisfactory research proposal, and clear evidence of research expertise.
Some Research Degree Topics require employment experience, research experience and/or transcripts for international qualifications.
