Master of Research (MRes)

A Master of Research (MRes) degree enhances your employability by providing specialised skills and research experience, making you more competitive in the job market and supporting your career ambitions.

Designed for students who are passionate about deepening their subject knowledge and developing advanced research skills, the MRes is a focused postgraduate degree that prepares you for both academic and professional success.

You'll gain hands-on experience with research design, data analysis, and academic writing - essential tools whether you're planning to pursue a PhD or aiming to stand out in today’s job market. MRes graduates are highly valued in sectors such as government, education, private industry, and research organizations. Plus, you'll build a powerful set of transferable skills - including critical thinking, problem-solving, and project management - that are in demand across a wide range of careers. If you're curious, driven, and ready to make a real impact in your field, the MRes is a smart investment in your future.

The MRes is a 12-month programme full time, or 24 months part time.

Available MRes pathways

Our MRes programme is designed to support students in pursuing in-depth independent research within an interdisciplinary academic structure. Whether you're focused on a policy role, an industry research career, consultancy or independent research, our pathways provide methodological flexibility - qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-methods - and a wide range of thematic areas to inspire your research in 8 different subject groups

You can also use the search and filters to find a more specific topic that interests you. Once you have selected a suitable topic, use this as a foundation to write your research proposal. If you wish to study a research degree topic not listed, or if you would like to study something similar to a topic covered, you are welcome to submit a speculative application including your own research proposal.
