A researcher from RGU has been awarded £25,000 to develop an app based on her PhD research which aims to help the people living with Parkinson’s get active and stay active. The app will provide education, self-management strategies and goals to help people develop a long-term exercise habit.

Dr Julie Jones secured the funding from Parkinson’s UK to ensure that her research findings could be transformed into a practical and accessible digital solution. PD Move is being developed in collaboration with individuals from the Parkinson’s community, including Jo Holland. Additionally, Dr Mark Holland, a Senior Lecturer in Sport & Exercise Psychology at Birmingham Newman University, is contributing expertise to the project.

Dr Jones expressed her enthusiasm for the initiative, stating: “This is an exciting project, and I am delighted that this funding will support the development of an interactive app, which was a key recommendation from research participants. We have been working diligently on every aspect of PDMove, including usability, marketing, and the potential impact of the app. My hope is that we can make it widely available to the Parkinson’s community, and with the support of Parkinson’s UK, ensure that it reaches those who need it the most.”

Caroline Rassell, Chief Executive of Parkinson’s UK, said, “Being physically active can be as important as getting the right medication in helping people with Parkinson's manage their symptoms and so we are proud to fund a range of physical activity projects including this exciting new app. By linking people with Parkinson's with physical activities and healthcare professionals, PD Move should help many people complement their self-care with professional support that positively impacts their physical and mental wellbeing."

As part of the app development process, Dr. Jones participated in the European funded Patient Innovation Bootcamp, an accelerator program held across Barcelona, Lisbon, and Copenhagen in 2024 alongside Jo and Mark. The program was developed to support development of digital health innovations designed to help patients, informal caregivers, and collaborators implement and scale up innovative solutions that address health-related challenges.

Dr Jones continues to collaborate closely with Dr Mark Holland and Jo Holland, ensuring that PD Move is shaped by both expert knowledge and lived experience. The team remains committed to delivering an impactful and user-friendly tool that empowers people with Parkinson’s to lead more active and healthier lives.
