RGU Hack, the largest student-led hackathon in the north of Scotland, will be held at the University and this year it is open to learners from a variety of different disciplines.

Taking place on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 February, competitors are given the opportunity to create unique improvised solutions, known as hacks.

It is being led by RGU Computing Society and it has already attracted several leading sponsors including the School of Computing, Engineering and Technology, Core29, CGI, Salus Technical, Elementz, Aize, Fennex, Sword, Dev4, Mintra and Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group (AREG).

Lloyd McGinty, RGU Computing Society President, said: "We're thrilled to host this year's RGU Hackathon, providing a platform for innovation, creativity, and collaboration. As someone who attended my first hackathon as a student at NESCol just two years ago, I can personally attest to the transformative experience these events offer. Now, as a degree student and the president of the society running this hackathon, it's an honour to facilitate the same opportunities for others.

“This year, our hackathon is particularly special with the recent establishment of the School of Computing, Engineering and Technology, and we're excited to introduce an engineering-themed challenge. With support from staff and the amazing sponsors joining us this year, participants will also have the chance to win incredible prizes."

Jordan Newlands, Hackathon Lead with RGU Computing Society, said: "RGU Hack brings together students from a range of disciplines to collaborate on innovative projects and tackle challenges set by our industry sponsors. Open to all students and recent graduates, the event offers a unique platform to network with professionals and peers across the sector.

“Beyond coding and problem-solving, participants can enjoy plenty of pizza, coffee and snacks to keep their creativity flowing throughout the night. New this year - students can optionally take part in speed interviews with our sponsoring companies - providing ample opportunity to network with industry professionals and even secure future placement or job roles for final year students.

“Participating in last year’s RGU Hack led to me securing a year-long placement as a software developer here in Aberdeen. This opportunity has allowed me to expand my skills, gain valuable industry experience, and earn while I learn as part of my MSc Computing Degree. RGU Hack only happens once a year and is a must-attend event for anyone looking to take their first steps toward a successful career in this sector.”

John Isaacs, Dean of the School of Computing, Engineering, and Technology, remarked: “RGU Hack is a highlight on our School’s calendar, and is eagerly anticipated by both students and staff.

“The future is defined by those that can create innovative solutions to real-world projects. This event gives the participants the confidence to do exactly that, designing, developing and creating pitches for their ideas in just over 24 hours.

"A huge thanks must go to all our industry sponsors who make this amazing event possible.”

RGU Hack is run by students for students with support over the course of the weekend coming from School of Computing, Engineering and Technology staff. Teams of up to four people work together and build a solution to one of the challenges from our industry sponsors using their favourite technologies, this is followed by a five-minute pitch to fellow students, staff and industry professionals.

RGU Hack will be held at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, within the atrium of the Sir Ian Wood Building. To sign up and for more information, visit RGU Hack's webpage.
