These physiotherapist-led programs will be held both at the University and various community venues, aiming to increase physical activity among residents. The classes are designed not only to enhance physical health but also to promote mental well-being, combat loneliness, and build support networks within disadvantaged communities.
Physiotherapy students from RGU, under the guidance of experienced physiotherapists will deliver these classes. This initiative allows students to apply their skills and knowledge in real-world settings, benefiting the community while gaining valuable experience.
Dr Julie Jones, Associate Dean at RGU’s School of Health, said: “We are delighted to receive this funding from The National Lottery. It enables us to offer a variety of exercise groups tailored to our community's needs, providing accessible opportunities for people to get active and stay active. This funding also enriches our students' learning experience, which is a crucial part of their professional training.”
The National Lottery Community Fund, Scotland Chair, Kate Still said: “Every day National Lottery funding is changing the lives of thousands of people in communities across Scotland. This project delivered by RGU, is a great example of community activity in action, showing just what can be achieved when people come together for a common cause or to help others.
“National Lottery players can be proud to know that the money they raise is helping to support this vital work which is making a real difference to so many.”
RGU's exercise classes cater to diverse groups, including individuals over 65, those with long-term neurological and cardio-respiratory conditions, and young people. The classes aim to promote fitness, enhance community cohesion, and improve overall health outcomes.
The classes are run on campus at RGU and provide regular and accessible exercise opportunities for the local community, which are tailored to their individual needs. This project is unique in that it serves the local community while also providing real life learning experience for our students, which is invaluable to their professional development.
The National Lottery Community Fund is the largest non-statutory community funder in the UK with community at the heart of its purpose, vision and name. It supports activities that create resilient communities that are more inclusive and environmentally sustainable and that will strengthen society and improve lives across the UK.
