Opinion: Oil rig simulation technology helping students and industry thrive
Monday 24 October 2022
It’s been a busy few months at Robert Gordon University as we welcome our students this semester.
We have been working closely with our simulator manufacturer Drilling Systems and Halliburton. We have completed installing our new rig packages, for our semi-sub, jack-up, and drillship with automated artificial intelligence (AI) drill floors and equipment including new automated Managed Pressure Drilling with Halliburton. These automated AI systems linked to our well data software gives an insight into what’s possible in the AI automated world for the offshore energy industry.
The drilling and wells simulators facility with their latest technology at RGU stands head and shoulders above other facilities. RGU’s focus on offshore and land energies means our students are well-trained and well-equipped to meet the needs of the energy industry moving forward, which is why we are continuously developing enhanced simulator technology that is designed for the future.
Our simulators also provide support for our local energy industry allowing personnel involved in active well operations to have continuous training through regular hands-on immersive simulation exercises and exposure to the AI operational environments. Ensuring competence during rig reactivations and providing teams the opportunity to rehearse challenging or infrequent operations in a safe environment. RGU works closely with the industry in providing solutions that meet its objectives.
These facilities help raise standards across the entire energy sector. This significant investment demonstrates our continued commitment to the energy industry in the region and helps to cement RGU’s world-class reputation as a key one-stop destination for energy sector immersive training.
