RGU nominated for national awards for opening its doors to prospective midwives
A team of dedicated midwifery lecturers at Robert Gordon University (RGU) have had their work recognised this week by being nominated for two prestigious national midwifery awards.
The academics from RGU’s School of Nursing and Midwifery have been shortlisted for Midwifery Team of the Year at next week’s Scottish Maternal and Midwifery Festival, which represents excellent inter-professional working and innovative use of staff, processes and technologies.

They are also one of five teams across the UK to be shortlisted for the Excellence in Midwifery Education Award by the Royal College of Midwives, to be announced in March 2019.

Both award nominations are in recognition of RGU’s successful Midwifery Insight Afternoon, which took place on Wednesday 22 August.

This was an informal opportunity for interested people across Grampian, the Highlands and Tayside to meet with academics, students and service users to learn about the experience of being a midwife.

The event consisted of several interactive workshops, where attendees heard details about studying at RGU, potential placements with the University’s healthcare partners across the North of Scotland, and preparing for life as a student midwife, with a relaxation session.

Fiona Gibb, Senior Midwifery Lecturer and Lead Midwife for Education at RGU, said: “It is extremely gratifying for everyone in the team to be nominated for these prestigious awards and regardless of whether we go on to win or not, it shows that our work promoting midwifery and developing the future of the profession is having a real impact.

“We have benefitted from working in partnership with our clinical colleagues, student midwives and women who us maternity services to address the growing need for skilled midwives across the country, and the Insight Afternoon was just one example of this.

“Midwifery is an ideal and rewarding profession for so many people, and we look forward to engaging with more school leavers and individuals looking to change their career, as we help them fulfil their potential.”
