David Cochrane MBE - Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)
“Presenting David with an Honorary Degree is testament to his efforts in developing the next generation for careers in hospitality. As a university, we strive to support current and future community business leaders to receive the encouragement they need to be successful”, said Principal & Vice-Chancellor, Professor Steve Olivier.
"At a time of significant challenges to the hospitality and tourism industry, we must recognise the success and talent in this sector. Not only in the jobs it provides but for the positive benefits of sustaining a local economy and culture within our communities.".
He received the Doctor of Business Administration award for his outstanding dedication to supporting young people and for recognition of his contribution to the sector.
As a passionate mentor, David was the Training Manager at the internationally renowned Gleneagles hotel. With a keen eye for talent, he desired to harness and develop people, which led him to naturally take on his current role as Chief Executive of Hospitality Industry Trust (HIT) Scotland. Under David's guidance, the Hospital Industry Trust Scotland has raised over £4 million and awarded over 10,000 bursaries and 2,000 scholarships to support the development of the sector and allied industries.
David kickstarted his hospitality career at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in 1986 before working for Norfolk Hotels, learning valuable skills and experience during this period. He would then progress to leadership roles such as Chief Manager and District Training Coordinator before landing a position at the Hotel and Catering Company, working in youth training and unemployment projects.
RGU is delighted to recognise David's contribution to investing in young people's lives, development, and futures in the hospitality industry, despite facing substantial challenges arising from the effects of Covid-19 and the cost-of-living crisis.
