Josh Duncan – BSc (Hons) Applied Sport and Exercise Science
The 24-year-old from Rothienorman, whose partner Abi Urquhart is in her final year at RGU, has completed BSc (Hons) Applied Sport and Exercise Science and said the initial decision to come to RGU was inspired by his brothers’ own university journeys.
This, coupled with a lifelong passion for sport, was the key factor as the former Meldrum Academy student opted to come to Garthdee like his relatives after finishing a Higher National Diploma in Sport and Exercise at NESCol.
Josh said: “I have always had a passion for sport, throughout my previous education from primary school up until now, I have been most attentive to physical education and hobbies based around sport.
“I am proud of my achievement of completing my degree. I had a really positive time at university, I felt I benefited from this and have grown into an individual who is ready for the next steps ahead.”
One of the highlights of Josh’s time at RGU was his third-year placement with the Russell Anderson Foundation, where he was teaching and coaching primary school children. This has even led him to secure a part-time role with the charity after graduating.
Josh’s passion for football led him to become the RGU football president and captain of the men’s first team. As president, he led 107 players across three men’s and one women’s team, and there were also title wins for two of the men’s squads.
During his time as President, the football teams raised over £6,000 for several charities through various fundraising initiatives.
He is now looking to the future where he feels sport and general wellbeing will play a huge part in his working life.
Josh added: “My career plans are based around having a positive influence on others through sport and physical activity. I wish to work with all ages, trying to initiate a positive relationship between people and sport. Currently I am working with children, ages 4-12, which has been both enjoyable and challenging, however the overall benefits make it very rewarding.
“My time at RGU built the foundation for my future. Thanks to the hands-on placements and leadership roles, stepping into the working world does not feel intimidating — it feels like the natural next step.”
