LLM Oil, Gas and Renewable Energy Law student from Ghana.
What attracted you to your course at RGU?
I was attracted to the LLM in Oil, Gas, and Renewable Energy Law at RGU because of the university's strong reputation for its practical approach to teaching and its focus on energy law, which aligns perfectly with my career aspirations. The course offers a comprehensive understanding of not just oil and gas law but also the emerging area of renewable energy, which is increasingly relevant in today’s global shift towards sustainable energy solutions. Moreover, RGU's industry connections and its location in Aberdeen, a key hub for the energy sector, provide valuable opportunities for networking and practical experience.
Before coming to RGU, what were your expectations? And now that you are here, have your experiences differed?
Before coming to RGU, I expected a fast-paced learning environment that would challenge me and push me to think critically about the legal aspects of the oil, gas, and renewable energy industries. Now that I’m here, my expectations have been met. The course is dynamic, and the lecturers foster a stimulating environment that encourages active participation and independent thinking. The pace is indeed fast, but it’s manageable, and I feel I’m gaining the skills and knowledge I came here for.
What’s the best thing about being an RGU student?
The best thing about being an RGU student is the opportunity to be taught by very seasoned and professional teachers. Their deep knowledge and experience make the learning process engaging and relevant. They don’t just teach theory but share practical insights and real-world examples, which helps in understanding the complexities of the oil, gas, and renewable energy sectors.
Are you on a Placement and where are you doing your Placement?
No, I am currently not on any placement, but I am open to such opportunities. I believe that gaining practical experience is essential, and I would welcome any chance to apply what I’ve learned in a real-world setting.
Describe your favourite memory of RGU so far?
My most memorable experience at RGU has been making friends. Before coming, I was often told that moving to another country, especially on your own, can be lonely and even depressing. However, my experience has been quite the opposite. I’ve met people from all over the world. The support from fellow students, both inside and outside the classroom, has made my time here not only enjoyable but also incredibly enriching.
Tell us about your most challenging or rewarding project, assignment or module. What did you like or dislike about it and how has it helped you?
My most challenging module is Energy Law and Policy, not because I disliked anything about it, but due to my late arrival and the fact that it covers entirely new concepts for me. Adjusting to the pace of the class while catching up on missed classes has been demanding, but it’s also been rewarding as I’ve gained a lot of new knowledge in a short period of time.
What is your favourite way to spend your time when you are not studying?
Mostly when I’m not studying, I try to catch up on sleep, read a good book, or watch movies. It helps me relax and recharge after a busy day.
What would you say to someone considering studying at RGU? Any advice you would share?

The university has an excellent reputation for providing quality education, especially with its focus on practical, industry-relevant learning. Beyond academics, RGU fosters a culture of inclusivity where students from all backgrounds feel welcome and supported. It’s a great place to grow academically and personally, and you’ll find a strong sense of community here.

What I enjoy most about living in Aberdeen is the peaceful and serene environment. The city is quiet, which makes it a great place to focus on studies, and it’s also full of fascinating tourist attractions. From its beautiful coastline to historical sites, there’s always something to explore. The people are friendly and welcoming, which has made settling in much easier.
