What Our Students Say
Sivabalan Kaniapan
PhD Mechanical Engineering student from Malaysia.
What attracted you to your course at RGU?
From the onset, the academic environment has been a source of fascination for me. I was confident that I could gain valuable academic experience from the diverse and knowledgeable faculty at RGU. Additionally, the cutting-edge research facilities, including well-equipped laboratories at RGU played a pivotal role in providing solutions for various industry-focused challenges.
In summary, I was seeking an opportunity to enhance my qualifications, delve into my research interests, and make meaningful contributions to RGU through my Ph.D., as the courses offered at RGU are not only designed to impart fundamental and problem-solving skills, but also provide opportunities for collaborative learning with fellow researchers. So, the prospect of working in a conducive, multi-faceted environment such as RGU offering opportunities for international collaborations was a dream come true for me as a researcher.
Before coming to RGU, what were your expectations? And now that you are here, have your experiences differed?
Before joining RGU, as an international student, I was uncertain about whether I would be accepted in the university community. However, my initial concerns were completely unfounded, as everyone has been exceptionally welcoming, hospitable, and receptive to my thoughts and feelings. I can confidently say that I no longer intensely miss my home country as much as I earlier did, as I truly feel at home here. Additionally, I feel incredibly safe, and I have gone ahead to recommended RGU to my nieces as a school of choice for their future studies.
What’s the best thing about being an RGU student?
One of the best things about RGU is the freedom to be myself and fearlessly express my thoughts. Coming from Asia, where many of us are not accustomed to openly sharing our feelings or thoughts, this has been a refreshing change. In some cultural contexts, saying 'yes' to things we may not wish to do is common. However, at RGU, the environment is markedly different; students have the right to voice their opinions without fear of judgment. This is particularly meaningful for me as a student, and I believe everyone should be granted an equal opportunity to express their opinions, a principle that RGU embraces.
Describe your favourite memory of RGU so far?
I can't pick just one favourite memory from my time at RGU, as there are so many remarkable experiences. However, one that stands out vividly is the first day of snow at RGU. It was a magical moment that will be etched in my memory for my entire life.
Tell us about your most challenging or rewarding project, assignment or module. What did you like or dislike about it and how has it helped you?
As a Ph.D. student, handling assignments, projects, and module submissions isn't inherently daunting. However, it is undeniable that challenges arise, particularly in terms of time management as submission deadlines approach. One of the most formidable challenges I have encountered so far was with my GSM010 written submission. Despite having prior experience in writing research articles, managing time between work and assignment submission posed a notable challenge. I believe this is a common challenge for many Ph.D. students.
What is your favourite way to spend your time when you are not studying?
When I am not studying, engaging in the arts of knitting, drawing, and gardening has become more than just hobbies for me; they are fulfilling and therapeutic aspects of my daily life. Knitting serves as a creative outlet, allowing me to craft intricate and personalized pieces while providing a sense of accomplishment with each completed project. The rhythmic motion of the needles becomes a meditative practice, offering moments of relaxation and focus. Drawing, on the other hand, is my visual expression on paper. It allows me to translate my thoughts, emotions, and observations into a tangible form. Whether it's sketching scenes from nature or expressing abstract concepts, drawing serves as a means of artistic exploration and communication. Gardening is a grounding and nurturing endeavour. Tending to plants, witnessing their growth, and creating a harmonious outdoor space brings a profound sense of connection to nature.
What would you say to someone considering studying at RGU? Any advice you would share?
I would strongly recommend that they set aside some funds, as there's a possibility, they may not secure a full scholarship. Having some financial support in reserve would be essential for their survival, covering living expenses for a period of at least 8 to 10 months.
What do you enjoy most about living in Aberdeen (city, food, people, entertainment, travel, etc.)?
I find solace and fulfilment in the tranquillity of nature rather than the bustling energy of high-tech cities. Living in Aberdeen has truly been a dream come true for me, as it allows me the freedom to immerse myself in the beauty of the outdoors. Whether it's the serene landscapes or the invigorating sea breeze, Aberdeen provides the perfect backdrop for my preference for nature. The accessibility to hiking trails and the ability to take leisurely walks anytime I wish, regardless of the season, adds an extra layer of joy to my daily life. This unique combination of natural beauty and outdoor activities has made living in Aberdeen a truly enriching and fulfilling experience for me.
