What Our Students Say

Jenni Halminen

Jenni Halminen

BSc (Hons) Games Design student from Finland.

What attracted you to your course at RGU?

I wanted a course that would test practical skills rather than being too academic. I researched universities in Scotland and wanted something focused on design. I discovered the Game Design course and found that computing courses are highly rated at RGU. I also already lived in Aberdeen, so it was a perfect match.

Before coming to RGU, what were your expectations? And now that you are here, have your experiences differed?

I didn’t have specific expectations about university, only that I wanted to learn about my subject. As a mature student, independence and real-life experience were already familiar to me. My experience has met my expectations, as I’ve been able to learn multiple programs for coding, video games, and art that will help me when applying for jobs.

What's the best thing about being an RGU student?

The best part is the practical education. Every lecture includes lab activities where you can test the skills shown during teaching. RGU’s practical approach means every lecture includes hands-on lab work, helping me build real skills for my future career. I’ve also met many like-minded people and formed very strong friendships, which has made the experience even better.

What do you enjoy most about living in Aberdeen?

I’ve lived in Aberdeen for over 10 years. I enjoy that it is a quieter city, but there are still lots of things to do in the city and surrounding areas. Everything is close by, and when the weather is good, it’s great to go for hikes in the nearby mountains, easily accessible by car or bus. I’ve always loved having nature close to where I live.

What would you say to someone considering studying at RGU?

If you want to focus more on practical skills over purely academic learning, RGU is a perfect choice. I used to think university was only about reading large amounts of material and writing essays, which put me off for years. However, I’m very happy in my degree, as most modules are based on coursework that allows you to demonstrate your skills.
