MSc Business Innovation and Entrepreneurship student from Kenya.

What attracted you to your course at RGU?

RGU is one of the few universities in the world that offers a Masters in Drilling and Well Engineering, which aligns perfectly with my background in Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering. Since my undergraduate years, I knew this was the path I wanted to take. Additionally, RGU's location in Aberdeen (a major hub for oil and gas operations in the North Sea), made it an ideal choice as it brings me closer to the industry.

Before coming to RGU, what were your expectations? And now that you are here, have your experiences differed?

First, as an entrepreneur I needed a course that would enable me to scale up my business. The course modules were like a perfect match because, they focus on practical real-world application of knowledge. During my first and second semester I was able to work on projects that directly impacted my business. Second, the RGU start-up accelerator motivated me to choose RGU, it provides training, mentorship, incubation space and access to funding. Third, the course entirely focuses on innovation and entrepreneurship thus it has developed my skills and enabled me to continue running a sustainable business.

Finally, RGU is ranked among the top university in the UK and the teaching staff are highly qualified.

What’s the best thing about being an RGU student?

As an RGU student, I enjoy the available free gym membership, subsidized events fees to events. Also, on Tuesdays, I enjoy free breakfast and free supper on Thursdays. I had the privilege to attend different freshers’ nights events free of charge as well as a day trip to Slains castle for a fee of 2.50 only. Among the other benefits of being a student include reduced bus fares, discounts on various convenience shops as well as entry fees to different places in the UK. Being an RGU student gives me a lot of pride to be associated with the institution which is highly ranked academically among my peers back at home.

Are you on a Placement and where are you doing your Placement?

No, I am not on placement. As a student we are allowed to work for 20 hours per week. I have a part time job at an oil and gas company in Aberdeen.

Describe your favourite memory of RGU or your Placement so far?

My favourite memory of RGU is the RGU One Nation event where different countries showcase their cultures and foods. The event was very inspiring to get first-hand information of the various communities and societies in RGU. I learned various words in different languages, tried different foods, danced to some music as well made lots of network and new friends.

Tell us about your most challenging or rewarding project, assignment or module. What did you like or dislike about it and how has it helped you?

Personal professional and academics skills module is my most rewarding module, it has played a great part in shaping my path in my career. It equipped me with the skills and knowledge to incorporate the knowledge learnt in class in my everyday life. My most challenging assignment was Business Creation because I procrastinated my assessment and had a hard time putting my ideas and research together. This encounter helped understand that starting my assessment early was the key to better performance.

What is your favourite way to spend your time when you are not studying?

When not studying I play basketball, visit the beach, go to the park or meet up with my friends. I also volunteer as a basketball coach.

What would you say to someone considering studying at RGU? Any advice you would share?

Do not overthink it. At RGU you will not only grow academically but also professionally and gain the best employability skill. This is the best institution for your personal academic and professional growth.

What do you enjoy most about living in Aberdeen (city, food, people, entertainment, travel, etc.)?

Living in Aberdeen city means proximity to all amenities including buses, African shops, supermarkets, charity shops, parks and the beach. Accommodation is affordable and the food is pocket friendly for students. Employers in Aberdeen are generous enough to tailor make shifts according to students’ timetables.
