About ABS

Aberdeen Business School was founded in 1965 and has been an integral part of RGU since 1992, reflecting the position of the city as one of the economic powerhouses of the UK, with a truly global reputation based initially, but not exclusively, on the North Sea oil and gas industry. Our vision is to empower, inspire, create opportunity for our students and equip them with the ability to drive change for tomorrow's society.

We are recognised globally for our corporate and management education and our courses at all levels are designed to equip students with the skills and capabilities that will enhance their future career development and prospects.

The Business School is consistently ranked very highly in the UK and indeed internationally.  Our online MBA programme was ranked first in the world in 2018 for class experience in the QS Distance Online MBA Ranking.  In addition, we continue to be ranked very highly for our student experiences in the annual National Student Survey (top in Scotland for overall student experience in both Accounting and Business Studies NSS2022).  Moreover, not only are we an AACSB accredited business school, an accolade achieved by around 5% of global Business Schools, we are also AMBA accredited and were the first Business School in the world to achieve business graduate association accreditation.

The accolades don't stop there: in 2020 we were named Business School of the Year in the Times Higher Education Awards. More recently, we have also been awarded the Small Business Charter in recognition of the work we do in the SME sector. All these awards, in their different ways, reflect the outstanding quality of our work-based learning, our first-class, innovative teaching and the creativity and variety of experiences our staff bring to ensure we provide our students with an exceptional business education and produce top quality, industry-ready graduates.

About RGU

Robert Gordon University (RGU) offers staff and students alike a distinctive, professionally-focused academic environment in which demand-led teaching and research helps individuals develop and prosper. With significant, often unique, strengths across a wide range of educational areas, an impressive array of national and international awards and one of the most beautiful campuses - and regions - in which to live and work in the UK, we offer staff a unique platform on which to develop their careers.

Our University's role in the community can be traced back nearly three and a half centuries to the birth of Aberdeen merchant and benefactor Robert Gordon in 1668. Robert Gordon's mercantile adventures founded a strong and remarkably modern belief that his investment in the education of his townsfolk would equip them with the skills and knowledge to strengthen their success in Europe and further afield.

Today, more than 260 years after his death, the University which bears his name remains true to his spirit and enterprise.

Our City and Shire

Set between the rivers Don and Dee in the North-East of Scotland, Aberdeen, with a population of c. 228,000, is the best Scottish city in which to live and work, according to The Good Growth for Cities Index 2021 run by Demos-PwC.

Celebrated for its proximity to the sea and its famous, silvery, sparkling architecture, Scotland’s third most populous city is prosperous and cosmopolitan, outperforming other major cities in the UK in terms of jobs, skills, income and environment.  This is reflected in an eclectic mix of eateries, a lively nightlife scene, opportunities for outdoor adventure, year-round festivals and events, inspiring art galleries and interesting museums.

It is far milder here than you might expect from our northern location. The east coast is actually the sunniest area in Scotland, with around 1,500 of sunshine every year - ideal for the region's outstanding outdoor and active activities, which attract huge numbers of people throughout the year.

Our coastline is amazing – with rugged cliffs and beautiful sandy beaches which stretch for miles both north and south of Aberdeen. Charming fishing villages and world-class golf courses intermingle with magnificent castles overlooking the North Sea, while nature lovers will be delighted with the range of bird and mammal life inhabiting the landscape.

With the Grampian Mountains and Cairngorms National Park within an hour of the city, there are plentiful opportunities for mountain biking, climbing, skiing, snowboarding and white-water rafting. Aberdeen also has its very own snow-sports centre where you can ski and snowboard all year round while The Deeside Way offers the chance to run, walk or cycle from the centre of Aberdeen to Ballater in the Cairngorms National Park.

The city is also the perfect place from which to expand your horizons across Scotland, the UK and Europe. Edinburgh is easily accessible by road or rail; London is just over an hour away by air; while flights to European hubs such as Amsterdam and Paris takes less than two hours.
