EIG Sustainable Goals Student Ideas Competition
A bit of healthy competition never hurt anyone; at the RGU Entrepreneurship & Innovation Group (EIG) we are keen to encourage student entrepreneurial innovation through rewarding good ideas.
This competition is focused on inspiring students to contribute towards tackling any of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations (UN). The competition aim is to raise awareness of the SDGs and encourage RGU students to take innovative, creative, cross-disciplinary and proactive approaches to tackling these challenges through supporting sustainably focused early-stage business innovations.
Win cash prizes, raise your student profile, strengthen future employability, and give back all at the same time, we are rewarding innovation! This competition encourages the development of ideas in alignment with the UN SDGs and can potentially lead on to further entrepreneurial programmes and competitions such as the RGU Accelerator and Converge Challenge. Competition has been kindly sponsored by the RGU Foundation Annual Fund.
Competition Categories
Three competition categories:
- Social Impact - tackling SDG challenges on a global scale
- Contribution to Local Community - supporting businesses and groups both internal and external to the University
- Innovation - rewarding innovative business ideas within the SDG space
Timeline
This competition runs monthly during the academic semesters. At the end of each month the competition closes and a winner is chosen.
Prizes
Each month there is one winner and two highly commended entries. The top prize is £100 and with two highly commended entries receiving £50 each.

How to Apply
Students can apply online with a short text of 150 words. The competition is open to ideas for private businesses, social enterprises including third sector. Individuals and teams may apply. One entry per team/per individual per month. One prize per team.
Competition Terms & Conditions
If unsuccessful and you refine your idea or you have a new idea you can still apply another month. Share with fellow students to enter. Rewarding original, specific and practical ideas that provide solutions to any of the 17 SDGs and not just explaining what SDGs are.
About Student Innovation Challenges
In the past with the Student Innovation Challenge, we have partnered with industry e.g., Wood by running student challenges that helped organisations address their pain points, our university students contributed their fresh ideas to help solve them.
We’ve since merged the Student Innovation Challenge with the RGU Innovation Award Level 2. This has involved running collaborative workshops with VSA, CFINE and Fierce Beer to find innovative solutions to industry challenges.
