BSc (Hons) Clinical Practice for Pharmacy Technicians

This course bridges the knowledge gap identified by practising pharmacy technicians. The course may increase their practice scope and contribution to the provision of patient centred pharmaceutical care and clinical pharmacy.

The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) are the regulator for pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pharmacies in Great Britain. ‘Pharmacy Technician’ is a protected title by law and working pharmacy technicians must be registered by the GPhC.

Pharmacy technicians are a crucial part of the pharmacy team and are regulated by the GPhC as registered healthcare professionals. Regulation of pharmacy technicians was introduced in July 2011. There are over 26,000 pharmacy technicians registered with GPhC.

Pharmacy Technicians work under the supervision of pharmacists to ensure the safe running of pharmacy operations and make sure patients get the most from their medicines. Pharmacy technicians prepare medicines and have an active role in offering healthcare-related support and guidance to patients and the public.

Due to the expanded role of pharmacists that includes independent prescribing, some clinical aspects can be performed by another pharmacy professional with the appropriate clinical training and knowledge; pharmacy technicians are best suited for this. This top-up degree for pharmacy technicians will equip them to the underpinning knowledge required to confidently undertake expanded clinical roles.
