Enterprise Masterclass – Why startups fail?

Monday 20 September 2021 17:30 - 19:00

Location: Online via YouTube or In person at the Innovation Station, Sir Ian Wood Building

Mark Logan

What is the main cause of startup failure? Why do businesses break when trying to scale up? Mark Logan, Co-founder of Ipso Facto and former COO of Skyscanner explains.

How do you know when a small challenge in your startup could be indicative of oncoming failure? How do you avoid the pitfalls of failure and scale up your business? Startup post-mortems often cite lack of funding or having a product that isn’t fit for the market – but are these just symptoms of a deeper issue? As Scotland looks to recover from the pandemic, we need startups and high-growth scale ups more than ever – so we need to make sure entrepreneurs have the ability to navigate the pitfalls of failure.

In this Enterprise Masterclass hosted by the RGU Entrepreneurship and Innovation Group, we welcome one of Scotland’s most respected business leaders to share his insight from over 25 years of experience in tech startups. Mark Logan is current co-founder of Ipso Facto Consulting which advise high-growth startups and he was previously Chief Operating Officer of Skyscanner helping lead the company to a £1.5 billion acquisition in 2016 becoming one of Europe’s most successful tech companies and one of Scotland’s “unicorn” level businesses.

Mark was recently commissioned by the Scottish Government to conduct a Scottish Technology Ecosystem Review and has been appointed to oversee the implementation of the recommendations outlined through programmes with £7 million in funding in the first year. In 2014, the Institute of Directors named him Director of the Year and in 2016 he won the UK Digital Masters award for Excellence in General Management. Mark has supported businesses ranging from Trainline to Babbel, from FreeAgent to The DataLab and in this exclusive Enterprise Masterclass you will have the opportunity to hear from his insight and pose your questions.

In addition, the event shall welcome Alistair and Shehan from Archilink, an early-stage RGU startup providing a digital platform to connect architects with clients which has won national awards including Scottish Young EDGE. They will briefly share their insights into their startup journey and how they have overcome failure so far.

This event is open to all and shall include a small physical audience in the Sir Ian Wood Building who will hear from Archilink in the room, be able to network, ask live questions and interact with Mark who will be presenting virtually. For those unable to attend physically, the event shall be available virtually where you will be able to share questions for the discussion.

Please register in advance to receive joining instructions. You should also wait for a confirmation as to whether you will be able to attend on campus.
